The Storms & Squalls of Life By Paula M. Ezop - Bartlett, IL
|
It seems as if we always have something to worry about. Don’t we? We worry about our
children – will they pass that test? We worry about our husbands or our wives – will they get
over that cold? We worry about our parents – will they arrive home safely? We worry about
whether we will get to work on time. And if that isn’t enough to worry about; we even worry
about the “what if’s” that we conjure up in our minds.
Now, try to remember what you worried about a week ago, a month ago, or a year ago. It is
hard to remember isn’t it? Unless of course if you had perhaps gone through the darkest
days in your life. Unless you had a real life-altering event that you will never forget you can’t
really remember what you worried about. You can’t remember all of the little things that
made you worry – the little things that kept you awake at night.
Someone unknown once said, “It takes a real storm in the average person’s life to make
him realize how much worrying he has done over the squalls.” This unknown person was
truly a person of great wisdom.
When a real storm enters your life you do realize how the little things didn’t really matter; you
realize how what you thought was important no longer is. You realize that all of the time you
spent worrying about the little things – the squalls – was needless. The real storms in our
life seem to put everything into perspective for us.
I believe that what we need to do is to learn to navigate the squalls without apprehension,
without stressing out, and without worrying about all of the little things so much – the “what
if’s.” If we are able to do this then we will be better equipped to deal with the real storms in
life. We will be able to deal with the life altering events that we have no control over; the big
terrible storms like a terminal illness, the loss of a spouse, a child, or a parent. Yes, these
storms in our lives certainly put things in perspective.
I am sitting here typing and feeling sad because I have had these horrific storms in my life. I
have lost my parents and my spouse and if I let it the sadness will fill my heart and consume
my mind. But then I feel the love within and I know that everything is all right. You see our
spirits have a wonderful way of healing our hearts. Our spirits are what give us the strength
to go on; the strength to survive the storms of life.
I like to remember that the sun shines brightly after a storm and sometimes even a rainbow
may appear. Our spirits and the love that connects us all is our strength. When a terrible
storm enters your life look within, let your spirit guide you and strengthen you, and feel the
love that exists in your heart. Listen to the soft whisperings within your heart and you will be
able to once again see the sun and the rainbows; you will be able to lovingly embrace life
with a new wisdom and understanding.
We may not be able to avoid the humungous storms of life but we can find our strength
within. We can know that our hearts will heal and that the sun will shine upon us once
again. It does, “…take a real storm in the average person’s life to make him realize how
much worrying he has done needlessly over the squalls.”
